There is an old saying, “You are what you eat.”  You would think if that were true, I would look like a pizza; combination pizza to be exact. I may not look like a pizza, but it is true that the ingredients of food do have an effect on what we look and feel like.

Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks, so he is.”  Some people think and claim to be God.  It doesn’t mean they are of course, it just means they are usually full of crazy glue.  Some think they are incredible singers; and continue to believe it even after receiving a cruel, sometimes funny, brutally honest review on American Idol.

Though a healthy self image is very important, a person isn’t who they are based merely on what they think about themselves.  A person is who they are largely because of how they think.  For example, if a person believes that they are their own best savior, their own best hope to make their own way, they will act accordingly.  They will make decisions about family, friends, goals, money and life based on what it says in Judges 21:25, “Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” This person will think the way the world does and will look and act like the world.

If a person fills his head with objective truth, listens to and participates in worship, reads and meditates on the Word of God, listens to sermons and takes good advice from people, he will think more the way God does.  He will look and act more like God does.

Of course, our minds are bombarded with all kind of thoughts, some meaningless, others good and bad.  We are to take every thought captive and choose to reject wrong thinking and instead think about things that are pure, good and lovely.  Not easy to do!

I think I’ll order a pizza.
